For those of you who are wondering what the BEAST is, well... that's not so easy to explain. Suffice to say that the founders of this newspaper are are old media hands who for the last decade or so have been living outside of America—in Russia, to be exact. For the last five years, we were the editors of a Moscow-based publication called the eXile.

The eXile was (and is) an English-language biweekly newspaper that among journalists acquired a reputation over the years for being quite possibly the world's most outrageous and mean-spirited newspaper. That's about as specific as we'd like to be at this time. Those interested in learning more about our history are free to look at the eXile web site, which is still up and running at www.exile.ru. Better yet, buy our goddamn book, The eXile: Sex, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia (Grove Press, 2000). You can find it on amazon.com. There should be thousands of copies still rotting in a warehouse somewhere.

The launch of the BEAST marks the eXile's expansion onto American soil. It also marks the return home of a small group of Americans who have been away for a very long time. We are here in Buffalo on a mission... We'd say a mission from God, but we're all atheists. It's like a mission from God, let's put it that way. We'd like to keep the nature of that mission a secret for now. But if you want a clue as to what it is, keep reading. We are here for the long haul. It is going to be very, very interesting. We can promise you that.
